“Der Sturm was the name of a Berlin-based gallery and art magazine in the early 20th century that later became a well-known concept as one of the early modernist movements. Der Sturm’s activities grew and expanded with international exhibition tours, autumn salons and its own printing house. The founder of the activity was Herwart Walden, today recognized for his pioneering work for German Expressionism and Italian Futurism. At his side he had a Swedish woman: Nell Walden, born Roslund and raised in Landskrona. Her name is rarely mentioned in the literature about Der Sturm’s activities, but new research shows the central role she played as an organizer, publisher, network builder, writer, exhibition producer, economist and, not least, an art collector. In connection with the exhibition of the same name, Mjellby Konstmuseum is publishing the book Nell Walden and Der Sturm in collaboration with, among others, art historian Jessica Sjöholm Skrubbe and the Dutch artist Maaike van Rijn. The purpose of the exhibition and book is to highlight the story of Nell Walden and the role she had in Der Sturm. An important piece of the puzzle is the reconstruction of Walden’s extensive art collection. It shows the large network Der Sturm built up, and which artists Nell Walden considered important and inspiring. The exhibition features international names such as Gabrielle Münter, Alexander Archipenko, Marc Chagall, Isaac Grünewald, Jacoba van Heemskerck, Sigrid Hjertén, Oskar Kokoschka, Franz Marc, Pablo Picasso and others. In parallel with the administrative work, Nell Walden also developed her own artistic style. Her art expressed itself early on in the form of completely abstract, expressive paintings and playful collages, but Nell Walden also came to design environments, furniture, jewelry, glass and ceramics.”
