Written in London for star pianist Therese Jansen (Therese Jansen-Bartolozzi) but when published a couple of years later the dedication was instead for Mademoiselle Kurzbek (Magdalena von Kurzböck) one of the best players in Vienna at the time and a pupil of Haydn. The Grande Sonate is the last of Haydn’s piano sonatas, and is widely considered his most outstanding. – It has been the subject of extensive analysis by distinguished musicological personages such as Heinrich Schenker and Sir Donald Tovey, largely because of its expansive length, unusual harmonies and interesting development. The name Kurzbek is sometimes written Kurzbok, Kurzböck, also sometimes Kurzbeck. Kurzbeck, Madeleine de (actually Magdalena von Kurzböck), Viennese pianist, pupil and frequent accompanist of Haydn (1767-1845) and considered one of the best pianists of her time around 1800.
