James Joyce — ULYSSES. First edition

Out of Stock

A rare First Edition of Ulysses from Sylvia Beach’s Shakespeare & Co, a very good copy of the 11th Printing – the final version before the printing of the novel left Paris and moved elsewhere. The book was still banned in the States until 1934.  This copy was Børge (Boerge) Houmann’s copy (not signed). Houmann, a prominent Danish communist and resistance fighter, was working a translation of Joyce’s novel Ulysses, but tragically could not find the translation after the War. The manuscript had disappeared, apparently confiscated and later lost by Danish police, who got ahead of their German colleagues by lovingly caring for the Danish Communists. In all a highly collectable copy.

Description

Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1930. Uncut in the original blue wrappers. II, 735 pp. Spine with some scraping off (see photos) but overall a rather well preserved clean copy of this extremely fragile printing.
