The exhibition Magna Feminismus: Kunst und Kreativität took place at Galerie nächst St. Stephan in Vienna. Additionally the invitation presents the 21st International Art Talk, marking the end of the exhibition. The four-day program included discussion groups, lectures and film screenings. Both the exhibition and the conference were intended to provide “an overview of female sensitivity, imagination, projection, and problems, suggested by a tableau of pictures, objects, photos, lectures, discussions, readings, films, video tapes and actions.”The video artist VALIE EXPORT, who initiated both the exhibition and the conference, explains in the catalogue’s introduction that the women movement in the US had inspired her to prepare the international conference in Austria. In 1972 she contacted the director of Galerie nächst St. Stephan, who vaguely agreed to host the conference. After postponing the show several times, it was first in 1974 the new director of the gallery Prof. Oberhuber agreed to realize the project. The initial idea was compromised, as the exhibition focused on works by Austrian artists , such as Hilde Absalon, Renate Bertlmann, Friedl Bondy (Kubelka), Birgit Jürgenssen, Maria Lassnig, Friederike Pezold, Cora Pongracz, Meina Schellander and Karin Schöffauer. Additionally, music was played by Dorothy Iannone und Franca Sacchi, as well as video works by VALIE EPXORT, Rebecca Horn, Muriel Olesen, Friederike Pezold, Ulrike Rosenbach and Katharina Sieverding were being screened.. The conference added an international perspective.Conference Program: 21.
