The first edition 1955 was included in Roth 101 Books, The Open Book and Parr & Badger: “one of the most successful collaborations between a great writer and a great photographer ever published” (Roth). The first African American to be awarded a Guggenheim fellowship, in 1952, De Carava (1919-2009) used the grant to create a photo portrait of his native Harlem New York from which the photographs for this book were selected
