“Aufsaetze” was the first of a total of three books that were published at short intervals by the then newly founded Kurt Wolff Verlag. The 49 texts collected here mostly come from Walser’s time spent in Berlin. They had previously appeared in the magazines Schaubühne, Neue Rundschau, Rheinlande and elsewhere. In addition to poetically experimental texts on theater, cinema and the big city, there is also Walser’s first portrait of the poet Brentano. In these essays, according to Max Brod, Walser “not only created new details, no, completely new literary genres”
