In his 1982 book Palimpsests: Literature in the Second Degree, Genette analyzed Oulipian constraints (like lipograms and S+7 text transformations) and classified Oulipian structural techniques as a modern evolution of parody and “playful transformations,” arguing that their highly mathematical constraints function as algorithmic narrative engines. The Oulipian Response by Noël Arnaud responds to and dialogues with Genette’s theories: Genette sometimes misunderstood Oulipo’s ultimate goal because he looked for a traditional semantic intention behind every text, whereas the Oulipo explicitly prioritized structural, mathematical, and algorithmic generation over a pre-determined authorial message.
