First edition / Edition originale

Froehlich’s second album, still self-authored, Bébé aux bains de mer, “text by his mother, drawings by Lorenz Frœlich. Later also published in English as “The little darling at the seaside”. Each page is titled, illustrated and augmented by a short text. All is written in the present tense and the sentences are linked in a series of “and then” which imitates the child’s way of telling stories. In the final illustration, Frœlich invents the drawing that Lili would have made, on her return, for her godfather, a pastiche of a child’s drawing which depicts a flower, a smoking locomotive and two “men” half-length in the transparency of water. Frœlich superimposes his own drawing and that which he attributes to the child, which would be like an iconographic transposition of childish speech. Could Frœlich be one of the first artists to introduce a pastiche of a child’s drawing in an album intended for children? (Isabelle Nières-Chevrel)
