Around the year 1912, New Orleans photographer E.J. Bellocq developed a fascination with the prostitutes in the notorious Storyville district of the city. His portraits of the women are the only evidence of his work to have survived, the glass plate negatives coming into the possession of American photographer Leo Friedlander. In 1970 Friedlander’s prints from the original plates were the subject of an exhibition and publication by MOMA in New York
