Valerio Adami’s (Bologna, 1935) pictures condense the fragmentation of Cubism, the forms of Futurism, and the particular aesthetics of Pop Art. The sources range from the cinema, the comic, and advertising to literature, music, philosophy and the great myths of western culture. Adami has inspired many writers and thinkers. Octavio Paz underscores his great control in drawing and his direct and discerning style. Italo Calvino wrote “Quatre Fables d’ Esope” for Valerio Adami and in1975, the philosopher Jacques Derrida devoted a long essay, “+R: Into the Bargain”, to Adami’s work, using an exhibition of Adami’s drawings as a pretext to discuss the function of “the letter and the proper name in painting”, with reference to “narration, technical reproduction, ideology, the phoneme, the biographeme, and politics” (The Truth in Painting”)
