“During March 1963 I produced an hour-long record of interviews with eleven artists – Jim Dine, George Brecht, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, John Wesley, Robert Watts, Tom Wesselmann, Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Jim Rosenquist, and Robert Rauschenberg – in the ‘Popular Image Exhibition’ at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art, Washington, D.C., organized by Alice Denney, April 18 – June 2, 1963. This was the fourth exhibition of ‘pop artists’ held in the six months since ‘Art 1963: A New Vocabulary’ opening October 25, 1962, in Philadelphia, followed by shows at Sidney Janis Gallery in New York and Dwan Gallery in Los Angeles. I used an old reel-to-reel tape recorder to record long conversations with the artists in their natural environments. Henry Geldzahler helped out at a party. The interviews were extensively edited to fit the record format and to bring out what I though was most interesting. Andy Warhol silk-screened the record covers… A cassette version of the record was made available from Experiments in Art and Techonology, New York City in 1981. Originally released on LP in 1963 this cassette was accompanied by a spiral bound 46-page booklet with transcripts of the interviews. The booklet cover is approximately 4.5″ wide and roughly 5.5” tall. The tape itself gives the title as “Interviews with 11 Artists”. The booklet says “On Record: 11 Artists 1963”. The title is often referred to as “Giant Size $1.57 each” as this is what is written on Andy Warhol’s cover art.
