“Vehicles”: The text includes conceptual, metaphorical transports such as The Vehicle of Subtle Idolatry and The Vehicle of Angelic Enumeration.Collaborator: The book features distinctive, surrealist illustrations drawn by the prominent Australian outsider artist Anthony Mannix. Mannix is an artist that manly works with artist books. As an artist with experience of complex mental health issues, or what he prefers to describe as ‘mixed realities’, Mannix has often been categorised as an ‘outsider’ artist. Among the earliest display of the artist’s images were collaborative publications in the 1980s including Vehicles (1985), that includes a series of writings by the poet Philip Hammial which were paired with drawings by Mannix, distorted human and animal faces combined with wheels of various dimensions. Hammial is the director of The Australian Collection of Outsider Art, and has curated or helped to organize many exhibitions of Australian Outsider Art – in Australia, Germany, France, Belgium and the US. In 1979 he became the editor of Island Press. Possibly the oldest small press in Australia still publishing poetry
